Aodh "Athlamh" O'Neill or Aodh "the Dexterous" King of Ailech, was born about 1003. He was the son of Flaithbertach mac Muirchertach. participated in many of the raids and battles led by his father and had been heir to the sovereignty of Ireland.
He was the father of Donal "an t-Ogdhamh" O'Neill and Aodh Anrachan O'Neill. The Leabhar Chlainne Suibhne tells the story that Aodh Athlomhan had two sons who quarrelled, Anradhan and Domhnall; though Anradhan was the younger, he took his father's place as chief of the clan, but cursed by Domnhall, Anrahan left Ireland to settle in Scotland.
The second race, the Mac Sweenys, he (Spenser) says that it is from a house in England which is called 'Swyn', they have come; howbeit, 'Swyn' and 'Sweeny' are not equal, and, accordingly it is not from that house Mac Sweeny has sprung, but truly he is of the race of Niall: for it is from the posterity of Aodh Athlamh son of Flaithbheartach of the pilgrim-staff Mac Sweeny comes.
